Crossing the Rubicon ...
The story
is set in 49 BC when the Roman Empire was ruled by a
triumvirate in a complicated balance of power. According
to an agreement, Julius Caesar, Consul and Governor of
the province of Gaul, was supposed to remain with his
troops in the province he governed. At the time, the
Rubicon was a river forming the border between the
former province of Gaul and the Roman motherland.
Following
a disagreement between Pompey and Caesar, Pompey warned
Caesar that if Caesar and his troops crossed the Rubicon
this would irrevocably spark civil war.
On
hearing the news from a messenger Caesar set off with
his legions that very night. According to the legend,
when Caesar crossed the Rubicon he declared the famous
words "alea jacta est", which translated mean: "The die
is cast."
This action upset the old
balance of power in the Roman Empire for good. As
predicted, the crossing of the Rubico sparked civil war.
Julius Caesar decided to follow a path that broke all
links with the past.
Similar deciding moments
also happen in a personal and corporate context. At such
moments, it's necessary to decide whether to set off in
a new, unknown direction without returning to old,
familiar ways, or whether to leave things as they are.
Venturing a new path changes
a fundamental quality that was previously trusted and
offered security. Before taking such a decision, it is
obviously necessary to consider structures, strategies
and processes very carefully. But a degree of
uncertainty still remains. Deciding to try out new
things requires lots of courage and a willingness to
take risks.
In psychology, making
a decision that you can't withdraw is following to
Caesar's decision named as "crossing the
Rubicon".
Decisions that involve
"crossing the Rubicon" have a major impact on future
personal and corporate development processes. So we wish that decision-makers, teams and
corporate units always pluck up courage to cross the
Rubicon well prepared.
That's why we call our
company RUBICOM. It represents a combination of the
words "Rubicon" and "communication".
Consequently, our logo
symbolizes crossing a crevasse or threshold to enable a
new beginning.
